Last week NFU prsident Tim Bennet was inceremoniously ousted by the council at the AGM. Challenged by Peter Kendall, he lost the vote by almost two to one, as members demonstrated their desire for change and the need for effective communication, strategic directtion and proper management of the organisation.

It is a brutal system and a serving president has not been dismissed like this before, and it did leave a nasty taste in the mouth. But the industry's needs are greater than any one man, and we are in a mess.
