Elderly woman's bag snatched in Tesco

AN elderly, disabled woman had her handbag snatched in Tesco, Lewes, at lunchtime today (Thursday).

The woman was shopping with her husband in the store.

The couple, both in their 80s, were wheeling a trolley out of the store after completing their shopping at about 1.15pm when the woman noticed her handbag was missing.

It had been hanging on the hook at the back of the trolley and was between her and the shopping.

In the bag was her purse containing cash to the value of about 18 pounds and several credit and bank cards as well as keys and personal possessions.

The bag also contained her husband's wallet containing driving licence, documents, cash to the value of about 15 and credit cards.

When telephone calls were made to credit card companies and banks they were informed two unsuccessful attempts had been made to use two separate cards.

They were refused as the would-be users did not have the correct pin numbers.

The woman said: 'I am always very careful to watch my bag at all times. This must have happened in a split second when my attention was diverted.'
