Dungeness B wins top award for safety stats

DUNGENESS B power station has been recognised for its exceptional safety record.

The local EDF Energy power station was selected for the top award in the ‘Electricity’ sector, against stiff competition from organisations across the country, in the recent Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Occupational Health and safety Awards 2012.

David Rawlins, awards manager at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), said: “The RoSPA Awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention.”

“We congratulate Dungeness B power station on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.”

RoSPA is a safety charity with a 95-year history. Dating back to 1956, the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards scheme is the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK.

The awards recognise commitment to accident and ill health prevention and are open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. The scheme does not just look at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

“I am very pleased to accept this award on behalf of all the staff and our contract partners who work at Dungeness B power station. Safety is our over-riding priority at the station and for this commitment to be recognised nationally is an exceptional achievement,” said Station Director Martin Pearson.

“We work in an industry which prides itself on its safety record, so to be selected as top of the entire sector reflects the extraordinary lengths we all go to at Dungeness B to ensure safety while producing low carbon electricity.

“At full capacity Dungeness B power station is capable of safely generating 1,100 megawatts, enough electricity to supply about 1.5 million homes.”
