Drivers in this year's Regis Rally face new challenges

The annual test of motoring skills will take place around Emsworth for the first time.

Organisers at Bognor Regis Motor Club are delighted to have gained the agreement of the town's Brookfield Hotel to act as the start and finish of the route.

Ali Green, the club's press officer, said: "Moving the event about ten miles west this year will allow access into new roads and challenges.

"The rally provides a welcome boost to the local tourist economy. Many competitors need to stay in the locality for at least one night to take part and also use local shops and services during their visit.

"The event is always well supported and sees crews travelling from as far afield as Cornwall, Norwich, Yorkshire and Wales to take part."

Last year's rally attracted 49 crews.

The 2009 staging is being held on October 24. Cars will start from the hotel from 9am and follow a route of about 135 miles through the country lanes of Hampshire and Sussex at average speeds set at under 30mph.

Venues on private grounds will enable the special tests to take place. A morning coffee halt and lunch break will provide the crews with a rest. The first car should return about 5pm.

The event is part of a national championship. Many of those due to take part are vying for top honours to provide the prospect of an exciting day of classic motorsport.

Historic cars registered before 1981 can enter the rally.

They are split into classes depending on the vehicle's age and the experience of its crew.

Experienced organiser and navigator Mick Briggs heads the motor club's team as the clerk of the course.

His deputy is top autotester and leading championship driver Martin Neal. The team will ensure the day is run professionally.

Lesley Neal will perform her usual role of looking after the entries, as the treasurer, while Neil Worsfold will be the chief marshal, helped by Pete Pennycate.

But plenty of spaces are available for volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Helping out gives the best chance to get close to some gorgeous machinery from the 1950s to the 1970s.
