Drama student tackle the big issues

Students put on stunning performances over two evenings when Rye College presented its annual Festival of Drama recently.

This year, the extracts, scenes and short plays were from contemporary theatre, all of which explored the highly topical issue of adolescent mental health and wellbeing.

Ticket sales raised £150 for the charity Young Minds: The voice for young people’s mental health and wellbeing.

Year 8 students presented The Scary Play, by Judith Johnston, and Chicken, by Mark Wheeler and Year 9 students ‘A Memory of Lizzie’, by David Foxton. These pieces were performed with skill and polish.

GCSE Drama students performed Find Me, by Olwen Wymark, in a thrilling interpretation of the play with notable actors being Sofia Cox, Holly Eldridge, Isobel Riggs, Katie Wren and Thomas Pickering.

Year 11 students gave an extremely professional performance of the challenging play Chatroom, by Enda Walsh. Esther Seal, Rose Ackerman, Eve Killelay, Sam Hughes, Joe Stone and Joe Maylam all gained full marks when the GCSE examiner graded their performances.

Head of Drama, Sarah Wall, would like to congratulate all ninety of the performers and the Year 10 Performing Arts students who took on the front of house and backstage roles, under the direction of Entertainment Workshop.
