Bognor RFC played its first game on September 10, 1965, against Seaford.

“Since then Bognor RFC has gone from strength to strength and 50 years later we are celebrating our club’s 50th birthday this season,” said club chairman John Donoghue.

He is looking to track down as many of the original players as possible for a reunion.

A series of celebratory games take place on August 29 as part of the ongoing celebrations.

“Our founder member, John Norris, is sponsoring a pre-match luncheon for as many people as possible that we can locate, who were involved with the club in its first season at Nyewood Lane (1965/66) or who played in the 1960s,” added John.

Original member Barry Mitchell still plays at the club and Ian Ellis, Mick Trenchard and Stan Jonas are still non-playing members.

Jim Clare, who played in the first year, will be travelling from Australia to attend the luncheon.

Names of players who the club is trying to track down include Mike Marshall, Dave Outen, Ron Allen, Alan Cockburn, Richard Schofield, Tony Butcher, Roger Norgett, Ross Fisher, John Davis, Tim Brown, John Wilding, Roger Karn-Smith, Peter Blackman, Ian Hill, John Davis, John Waghorn, Barry Mercer, Mick Oliver, Bernard Norris, Ron Allen, Ron Stevens and many more.

John asked for anyone who played for Bognor in those first five years or who knew any of the names to call 07971 052857 or email [email protected] as they would like as many founding members
as possible to attend the lunch and join the celebrations.
