District gears up for tourism week

A number of visitor attractions in Wealden are holding special events in celebration of the first-ever British Tourism Week, which is being held from March 12-18.

'As British Tourism Week seeks to highlight the importance of the 74 billion contribution tourism makes to the national economy, we must not forget how important visitors are to the Wealden economy,' said Councillor Keith Whitehead, Cabinet member for Planning & Regeneration.

'Whether they are stopping off en-route or choosing to stay and explore Wealden's wonderful environment, visitors are extremely important to the economic well-being of the community.

'Wealden is so close to London, and yet so far away, as our visitors discover.

'And with the Olympic Games in 2012, we should be preparing ourselves for even more opportunities.'

On Thursday March 15 a Leaflet and Information Give-away is taking place at Michelham Priory, Upper Dicker, from 10-1noon providing information on many of Sussex's top attractions.

Other events include a special engineering challenge which is being held at The Observatory Science Centre on the weekend on March 17 '“18 '“ see www.the-observatory.org for more details, and a week of lambing at the Seven Sisters Sheep Centre, East Dean www.sheepcentre.co.uk, which includes one of the largest collections of sheep breeds in the world.
