Cyclist calls for urgent repairs to lethal road in Aldwick

Pressure is being put on highways officials to resurface a lethal road in Aldwick.

The need for Aldwick Street to be improved was stressed by cyclist John Stocker.

He said the stretch in front of the Ship Inn was dangerous.

A trench some 200 yards long is opening up in the road where a utility company's repairs are being destroyed by wear and tear.

The trench is about two-thirds out along the road's southern side '“ exactly along the line where cyclists have to precariously pedal because of a row of parked cars.

Mr Stocker, 74, of Aldbourne Drive, told Aldwick's annual electors' meeting: "I have been here for eight years and Aldwick Street has always been bad to cycle along.

"Because of the cars parked along the kerb, you have to go out into the road and straight into the trench. You can't go too far out to avoid it because of the traffic coming the other way."

Outside the meeting, local resident and Arun district councillor Trevor Bence, who cycles along Aldwick Street, said he was still waiting to hear when repairs would be carried out following his earlier complaint about the road's condition.

"Aldwick Street is dire for cyclists and it has been dire for a long time. I would say it is lethal for them and for other road users.

"The channel that was created when they put a water pipe in has crumbled away to create a series of divots," he said.

Robin Brown, who attended the meeting, said he went to look at Aldwick Street the next morning and agreed a new surface was needed.

He said: "I have been on to county highways and am informed that road is to be completely resurfaced during 2009/10."

A spokeswoman for West Sussex County Council said: "The county council is aware of the situation on Aldwick Street.

"A site assessment is due to take place soon."
