Couple's computer troubles with Comet

A £500 Acer computer bought at Comet was 'not fit for purpose' according to Sidley man Kevin Thurmer.

He said it developed faults within weeks of purchase but more than that, he had little customer satisfaction from dealings with staff.

He bought the computer in March last year and soon the printer started making noises and had to be replaced with a refurbished one.

Next the system slowed right down and crashed because of a problem with the hard drive. This was dealt with by Comet but happened again a week after the 12-month warranty ran out.

At this point Kevin said he was told the motherboard and PSU had faults and he was advised to take it to an independent IT shop.

Kevin told the Observer his calls to Comet were by now not being returned and he could get no help.

Kevin, of Faygate Close, had bought the computer for the benefit of himself and partner Sylvia Robinson.

He said: “Comet say they will get back to me then two weeks later they still hadn’t called. You are like a little fish in a big pond because they don’t care. But it’s a lot of money. I don’t think the computer was fit for purpose really. I have never complained before - but this is terrible.

“What’s annoyed me is they never rang me back.”

The Observer contacted Comet for a response to Kevin’s problem and was told his computer was now being dealt with.

A spokesman said: “Comet is sorry to hear of the trouble Mr Thurmer has experienced with his computer and we apologise if he did not receive the high level of customer service we expect.

“As the computer is now beyond warranty, a chargeable repair would be the norm, however as a gesture of goodwill we can confirm that we performed a free inspection and repair on the unit and are now in the process of returning the computer to the customer.”
