County bids for new records office

A MULTI-million pound bid for a new archive and record office to serve East Sussex is being planned by East Sussex County Council which is developing a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for funds.

The current County Record Office has been housed in the old Beard's Brewery Maltings, near Lewes Castle, since the 1980s when the archives were moved from the basement of Pelham House.

Said county archivist Elizabeth Hughes: 'The Maltings is in a lovely position and people are very fond of it.

But it not fit for its current purpose.'
