College celebrates the success of apprenticeships in special week

The college is one of the biggest providers of apprenticeships in the South East and is fully committed to supporting the Government’s pledge to start 3 million new apprenticeships over the next 5 years.

Government statistics show there were 871,800 apprenticeships started in the UK between August 2014 and July 2015. 3,590 of these were based in East Sussex and Sussex Coast College Hastings provided almost 500 of these.

The college will celebrate the positive impact that both apprenticeships and traineeships have on individuals, businesses and the economy, over the course of the week. There will be an Apprenticeship Progression Evening, an Employer’s Breakfast – in partnership with FSB (Federation of Small Businesses), and an Apprenticeship Awards Ceremony to round things off.

The Apprenticeship Progression Evening is an open invitation to any students, parents, and employers who would like to find out more about getting involved with apprenticeships. The Apprenticeship Team and college partners will be on hand to advise and guide on potential career paths. It takes place on Tuesday March 15 from 5pm – 7pm in the atrium at Station Plaza.

The Employer’s Breakfast will be held at the Station Plaza campus on Thursday March 17 from 7:30am, Businesses in Hastings and Rother are invited to join the regular FSB attendees and be treated to breakfast, networking opportunities, and tours of the college.

The college currently has approximately 450 apprentices studying a range of courses including Health and Social Care, Hospitality, and Business Administration. Students are given the best possible pathways into employment thanks to the college’s strong links with over 1,500, regional and national employers.

National statistics show 90% of apprentices stay in employment after finishing their apprenticeship and 71% of these stay with the same employer. The college reflects these figures and continues to grow its reputation for producing employable young people, such as Leia Skinner.

Leia, who successfully completed a Business Administration apprenticeship with Bea-utiful Design & Print, has become an important asset to the business according to owner, Michael Tyrrell.

Michael was so impressed with Leia, that the company is supporting her while she studies a second qualification in Management Training. The company will then look to recruit with the aim for Leia to manage the new employees.
