Claremont charity concert

CLAREMONT School’s 80-strong community choir, accompanied by the Claremont chamber orchestra will be performing Karl Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’ tomorrow (Saturday) at 7pm at St Clements Church, Hastings Old Town.

Admission to the concert is free. This is the third year running that Claremont is performing a major choral work to raise funds for the Benevolent Fund of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment.

The soloists include local soprano Susannah Appleyard and tenor Mike Savage. Sam Hickman, a Year 9 student at Claremont Senior School, who has an established career in professional musical theatre is making his oratorio debut as a soloist.

The school will be welcoming the baritone Andrew Robinson from Lewes, and alto Elizabeth Cole from London.

Director of music, Monica Esslin-Peard, said: “Singing has always been at the heart of Claremont Prep and Senior Schools.

“However, the opportunity for our students from Year 3 upwards to sing in a major choral work with a professional orchestra and soloists is unique in the area. I am hugely impressed by the hard work which our students, parents, staff and singers from the local community have put into the rehearsals since September last year.”

The Claremont Chamber Orchestra, led by Tony Shorrocks, head of performance at the University of Liverpool, includes players from the university alongside professionals from Sussex and London, who have generously given their time to support the PWRR.
