Clampdown on fly-posting

It will remove posters, placards and banners put up without permission and evidence will be taken for potential prosecution.

The move is part of the council's plan to make Adur a cleaner, greener, safer place to live in and visit. The council is offering charities, community and voluntary groups alternatives, such as using community information boards in bus shelters and car parks.

They can also use the council's own website www.adur.gov.uk which has a "what's on" page. Permission may be given to charities or groups to use banners on sites the council owns, provided they meet the necessary conditions.

Community and leisure services committee chairman Keith Dollemore said: "We understand the need to promote events and other activities and there are plenty of alternatives to fly posting. We are working hard in Adur to improve the area for residents. We want our villages and towns to look attractive, not tatty."

The council has published a leaflet, which gives guidance and advice on how to promote events without fly posting. The leaflet is available from council offices and www.adur.gov.uk
