Challenging trek for worthy cause

A Westergate man is preparing to have the British Isles at his feet.

Colin Snook will take on the daunting 4,000km challenge of walking around the country from January 1. He will set off from Bognor Regis with England, Wales and Scotland ahead of him. He expects to take ten months to get round the coastline.

Colin's epic journey at the age of 71 is in aid of the little- known but unique charity, Climb, or Children Living with Inherited Metabolic Diseases.

He is a well-known figure around his village as a former firefighter, adviser on fire safety and as the co-ordinator of Southern Trails Walkers' Club.

He said he wanted to do more than potter along the promenade which many people of his age would consider an acceptable outing.

'Chasing a personal ambition is one thing, but I feel I must be in tow with a nobler cause,' he explained.

He has been inspired to support Climb after a chance meeting with a teenager in the final stages of a devastating metabolic disease which leads to severe disability and premature death.

Colin said: 'This encounter had a profound effect on me and because of this I have no hesitation in nominating Climb as the beneficiary of my effort.'

Some 16,000 families are affected by more than 700 metabolic diseases. Climb's major objectives include supporting families and funding research.

Colin added: 'Because of the complexity and sheer number of metabolic diseases, Climb is not one of the best-known charities. However, for those affected, the need for such support is great.'

He hopes to raise 50,000 from his exertions but he realises the logistics of his solo effort will be as challenging as the actual walk. Because of this, he is asking people to contact friends and relatives around the coast who could provide a bed for a night as well as seeking sponsorship.

The more host families that can be found the more money he raises will go towards Climb. Steve Hannington, the charity's executive director, said: 'This is a tremendous challenge for Colin and we are delighted to support his efforts every step of the way.'

Colin can be sponsored through the website www.climb.org.uk or by telephoning 0845 241 2173.
