Coffee Morning and Plant Sale: The popular Christian Aid Coffee Morning and Plant Sale is being held in the Village Hall tomorrow, Saturday 14th May from 10am '“ 12noon. There are always plenty of very reasonably priced plant bargains to be found and keen gardeners usually hurry to get there early to bag the bargains before relaxing with coffee, cake and a chat. As well as refreshments, there will be a raffle and cakes for sale and donations for both will be gratefully received that morning please.

WI: Last week’s meeting of the Catsfield WI was to discuss the Resolutions to be put to a nationwide vote at the AGM of the National Federation of Women’s Institutes in Brighton on 11th June. The two resolutions were presented to the meeting by Sarah and Jill, the first one being ‘Appropriate Care in Hospital for People with Dementia’. We call upon HM Government and the NHS to provide facilities to enable carers to stay with people with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia that have been admitted to hospital.’ The second one was ‘Avoid Food Waste and Prevent Food Poverty. The WI calls on all supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid food waste, thereby passing surplus food on to charities and thus helping to address the issue of increasing food poverty in the UK. The meeting then voted on the proposals, which were both carried with an overall majority (members were allowed a vote on each) following much discussion by the members and they will be supported by the Catsfield WI delegate at the meeting.

Then a game of Bingo was played, with Thora as caller and there were plenty of laughs as we struggled to be the first to produce a full card, much to the caller’s relief! A lovely WI tea and the raffle awaited us all.

St Laurence Church Fundraising: There will be another Coffee Morning the following Saturday, 21st May in the Village Hall from 10am to 12noon to raise funds for the church of St Laurence, there will be cake and craft stalls and also a raffle. Advance notice too of the next fundraising event for the church to be held in June, this is to give you time to gather up unwanted items to sell at a Car Boot Sale at the Playing Field on Saturday 4th June.

Sport: News from the Playing Field is that the summer sporting season has begun. Another round of rolling and preparing the wicket resulted in our first cricket match on Sunday. We played Crowhurst, batted first and amassed a good score of 183 for 6. before tea, David Taylor scored 30, Andy Williams 27 but the star as usual was Derek Fuller with 53, supported by other members of the team. Jackie Gurr provided a generous tea, setting the standard for the rest of the tea ladies and it was a joy to have the kitchen updated with a new fridge etc. Crowhurst finished with 123 all out, B Lingard scoring 17 and R Ledsham 42 with some mighty hitting. Tom Bristow-Diamond’s bowling figures were 5 for 22, matched by his son Jamie in his league match for his team on Saturday. Three generations of the family were there to watch. We play Netherfield at home on Sunday.

The Stoolballers are also back in the swing of it with the ladies and mixed teams both playing fixtures until the end of August. A lovely way to spend an evening is to go up to the Playing Field watching a good game while the children run around or amuse themselves in the play area.
