CASH STUMPED UP FOR WALL

THE renovation of the eastern boundary wall of the Dripping Pan, home of Lewes Football Club, will cost a hefty £175,000.And work is due to start within weeks.

Lewes District Council on Wednesday agreed to put 112,000 into the scheme.

The club will contribute the residual 63,000.

The wall in Ham Lane is crumbling and unsafe.

But it is also of some historic importance and is said to

have formed the eastern boundary of the medieval Priory of St Pancras.

The problem was to find a solution that preserved the heritage of the wall while also helping the football club

improve its ground.

A planning officer's report before cabinet members on Wednesday stated: 'The latest proposal is to provide emergency access into the ground from a new eastern entrance.

'The proposal will see the terracing of the eastern bank inside the Pan, enabling the club to gain a capacity certificate for up to 4,000 people in the ground, provide emergency access and also an additional entrance.

'There will be minimal disturbance of the inner bank and archaeologists will attend at key stages.'

Flint piers will be formed to the new access. The wall itself will be renovated where possible and, where it is not possible, will be rebuilt.
