Cash boost will help Rye peopleto stay in shape says council

Rye residents will be given the chance to get active thanks to a cash boost of almost £120,000.

Rother District Council successfully applied for money from Sport England’s Community Activation Fund for a three year project aimed at encouraging people to be more active.

The project, which was awarded £119,149, is one of 88 across the country to receive a share of the £15 million set aside to support grass-roots sport activity.

It will enable the council, working with partners from Active Rother, to provide suitable activities in Rye which will encourage residents in those areas to improve their health and fitness.

Activities are likely to include walking, running, table tennis and outdoor fitness sessions, as well as the chance to try other sports.

The project is part of a wider campaign by Active Rother to get residents to be more active and take advantage of a range of events and activities held regularly around the district.

Cllr Jonathan Johnson, Rother District Council’s portfolio holder for sport and equalities, said: “We are grateful that Sport England has supported our application and recognised the need to encourage local people to be active.

“This project builds on the work of Rother District Council and the Active Rother partnership with local clubs and organisations. It is a great chance in the next three years for residents in Rother to take steps in becoming more active and have a go at playing sport.”

Rother currently has one of the highest rates of inactivity in the South East.
