Carnival Capers

COLOURFUL carnival antics at the Flintstone Centre on Saturday gave more than 40 young people the opportunity to find out the real facts about substance misuse.

Children and Youth Project development officer Carol Fullick came up with the idea for Saturday's carnival workshops, aimed at tackling drug-related issues among young people, and was delighted with the feedback.

"The response and enthusiasm of the young people involved was overwhelming," said Carol, "I'd like to say a big thank you for the help and support of our volunteers and Alison Vermeeren, the community arts and heritage officer from Arun District Council, who helped make it possible."

Internationally acclaimed artists Carnival Collective, from Brighton, joined forces with the West Sussex Voluntary Organisations Liaison Group to offer this pilot project to young people.

Workshop leaders took part in drugs awareness training to help them prepare for the day which saw carnival dancing, samba drumming and an amazing outside procession incorporated into the day.

Daniel Bernstein, of Carnival Collective, felt this was a great way of getting an important message across: "We are delighted to have the opportunity to work on this project. It seems to be an innovative way of approaching important issues in a way which is appealing to young people."
