Cambridge beckons as Poppy is in top five

Cambridge University awaits a Felpham student who is among the country's best for studying media.

Poppy Goodheart's success in achieving one of the top five A level media results of 100 per cent enabled her to accept the offer of a place at Robinson College in Cambridge.

She will spend three years at the world-famous university from early October studying for a degree in social and political sciences.

She is believed to be the first Felpham Community College student in five years to go on to Oxbridge.

She said: "My feeling veers between being very excited and very nervous. But I expect most people are like that when they are going to university. It's just one of those things.

"It's a real step into the unknown. I don't know what's going to happen at Cambridge.

"I don't think you can because you are going to be among such a mix of people."

Poppy (18), of Upper Bognor Road, will be the first member of her family to study at Oxbridge.

She began her education at Edward Bryant Primary School along the road from her home before she moved to Felpham.

Her academic excellence saw her earmarked by her teachers for Oxford or Cambridge a year ago.

Her ability to achieve four straight A grades in her A levels '“ media, sociology, English literature and art '“ confirmed their expectations.

However, Poppy was away from the college when the results were revealed.

She was on holiday in Cornwall with her family. "We didn't realise the holiday and the results were going to clash," she explained.

"It was really strange having the college's examinations officer reading out my results to me over the phone.

"I thought I would get three As and a B. I was really pleased to get four As and I was glad to have the chance to speak to my media teacher, Patrick Hargood, to thank him for helping me."

Poppy's mother, Andrea Goodheart, added: "I am really proud that Poppy's hard work has paid off. She is a clever girl but that doesn't mean to say she is going to work hard and use it."
