Bexhill Talking Newspaper wantsto find more volunteers to help out

Bexhill Talking Newpaper Association is seeking both volunteers and new listeners.

The registered charity has been offering a free weekly recorded news and current affairs service to visually-impaired people in the Bexhill area since 1977.

Recordings were originally on compact cassette but are now made digitally and issued via memory sticks for listeners to play on equipment provided by the association.

Talking paper secretary Barry Edwards is appealing for volunteers to replace two recorders who have left after valued service. The association offers full training in the use of its recording equipment.

Working on a duty rota, recorders man the mixer desk during Friday recording sessions at the talking paper’s studio off London Road.

They then bulk-copy the finished result, which in addition to readings from the Bexhill Observer contains material produced by the association’s magazine teams.

The secretary also says that the association has recently lost a number of listeners. Some have died. Others have moved from the area.

Anyone who is visually impaired and living in the area is welcome to apply for Bexhill Talking Newspaper. Volunteers assist all new listeners in the use of the play-back devices issued to them.

The first talking newspaper was launched in Wales in 1970. Today there are 400 groups across the UK sending out recordings to 100,000 listeners.

Most record onto memory sticks which can be used with specially adapted MP3 players.
