Bexhill High School plans face council concerns

PLANS to replace the existing Bexhill High School have been met with concerns from Rother councillors over traffic and access.

At last week's planning meeting, the committee said the proposals for the site, which includes a new two/three storey building, a floodlit all weather pitch, multi-use games area and amphitheatre, would create more traffic problems in Gunters Lane.

Cllr Paul Lendon, of St Stephen's ward, said: "This is actually in my ward and there are obviously lots of concerns.

"The biggest issue is traffic-calming measures.

"There certainly is a serious issue with traffic calming in Gunters Lane."

He added: "It's going to add to an already very serious problem.

"We have really got to show our concerns to Highways about access to the school."

Cllr Joy Hughes said: "The access into the school concerns me more than anything.

"There is not an enormous amount of car parking there."

There are currently 188 staff working on the site and planners estimate the new school would see 11 extra staff employed.

Cllr Lendon said a lot of children walk to the current site from the station, but said he felt students would not want to walk from the station to the new site.

He added: "My concerns are definitely on traffic access and how children are going to get from the existing site to the new site."

Cllr Joanne Gadd said: "Something has got to be done about the access without any shadow of a doubt.

"It's going to cause a terrible problem down Gunters Lane."

The plans have been deferred.
