And 199 new homes can be built on the college s present Turkey Road site.

The formal outline approval for the relocation was made after a mammoth four-hour debate by Rother planners.

Traffic fears from the Highways Agency were all but ignored.

Bexhill College had applied to build a new campus in Penland Road, funded by the sale of the Turkey Road site to developers Redrow Homes for 199 new homes.

Both schemes were debated back to back at the Town Hall meeting as one development relied on the success of the other and followed a public meeting of worried Turkey Road Residents recently.

The schemes may now be called in by GoSE (the Government Office for the South East) as the Turkey Road site is a departure from the District Local Plan in that it does not contain an element of employment land.

Chief planning officer Les Robinson outlined proposals and objections for both schemes.
