Arun rubbish collections suspended again

REFUSE and recycling collections were again cancelled in Arun district today (January 8) because of the continuing dangerous conditions on icy roads.

The council said it was unsafe for crews working for its contractor, Verdant, to drive along residential roads to reach homes.

Weather permitting, collections will resume on Monday (January 11), reverting to the normal schedule. Homes which have not had rubbish and recycling collected this week will receive a double collection (up to 10 black sacks or two 240 litre bins) next week on their normal collection day.

An Arun spokeswoman said: "We are asking residents to please carefully contain and store all their extra waste and recycling securely.

"We also cannot collect clinical waste today. However, we do have 4x4 vehicles out today and Saturday to visit as many properties as possible to deliver extra yellow sacks.

"Unfortunately this vehicle cannot routinely collect sacks owing to the law on how this waste has to be handled and delivered for treatment. Weather permitting, normal collections will resume on Monday."

All Arun offices and receptions will close at 4pm today.
