Arun residents waste no time going even greener

GREEN Arun residents are recycling almost half of their rubbish, dramatically reducing the amount that goes to landfill.

West Sussex County Council figures show that in the three months following April's improvements to the district's kerbside collection service, 42 per cent of all household waste in Arun was recycled.

Paul Wotherspoon, Arun cabinet member for the environment, congratulated residents on their sterling efforts.

"This figure is really impressive. Once again our residents have shown us just how much they really do care about the environment around them and I hope this upward trend will continue," he added.

This time last year, the proportion being recycled was 38 per cent, and the rise means financial savings, too.

A spokeswoman for Arun said that each tonne of waste not sent to landfill was a saving for West Sussex taxpayers as a whole, in terms of not having to pay landfill charges.

In April, Arun residents were given the opportunity to use their kerbside bins for recycling glass bottles and jars, paper-based food and drink cartons such as Tetra Pak, aluminium containers and foil, and aerosol cans, as well as the cardboard, paper, plastic bottles, and aluminium and steel cans already accepted.
