Arun misses out on £1m windfall

LITTLEHAMPTON and other towns and villages in Arun district have missed out on transport improvements worth more than £1m, because developers weren't asked for the money.

Better public transport, improved cycling and pedestrian facilities, safer routes to school, traffic calming and other safety measures are among the projects the cash could have funded, says a West Sussex County Council report.

It blames Arun District Council for the lost windfall and says Arun is the only planning authority in West Sussex not to have signed up to a system introduced almost three years ago, which allows the number of parking spaces on new developments to be reduced instead, if developers pay for transport improvements.

However, Arun has hit back, claiming it is defending residents' rights by insisting on adequate parking spaces within developments, to avoid causing parking problems on nearby streets.
