Arena Centre takes on popular indoor pool

A second swimming pool is to open to Bognor Regis residents. The management and staff of the Arena sports centre have added an indoor pool to the range of facilities.

They have taken over the operation of the pool situated on the neighbouring Bognor Regis Community College campus by its South Way entrance.

Assistant headteacher community Sandy Meyers said: 'The Arena will be expanding the swimming provision to cater for more of the local community through recreational swimming and specialised courses.

'Hundreds of swimmers currently use the facilities every week and it is hoped that hundreds more will soon be joining them.'

The swimming pool was built in 1973 by the West Sussex Education Committee with substantial contributions from the Parent Teacher Associations of Bognor Regis School, now the community college, and nearby Michael Ayres Junior School.

Bognor Regis Swimming Club and Bognor Regis Urban District Council also helped out financially.

The pool was opened in October 1973 by Alderman Reginald Martin. It measures 25m by 8m to allow four swimming lanes.

A refurbishment of the pool was carried out three years and new changing rooms were added in 2006.

The pool is home to Bognor Regis Swimming Club, the 5-11 club swimming lessons, Saturday Swim School and a disabled swimming group.

Swimming lessons for college students and many of the junior schools in the area also take place there.

When the pool opened, it was the only one in the Bognor area until the 50m Fred Lyons swimming pool at the Arun Leisure Centre opened in Febuary 1996.
