Aldwick residents go for gold

Volunteers in Aldwick have launched their efforts to turn green into gold this year.

The individuals and community groups behind Aldwick in Bloom began their work to make 2008 another year to remember.

Aldwick is the proud holder of a silver gilt award from last year's South and South East in Bloom competition. It also won silver in the Britain in Bloom contest.

This year's work will be concentrated on the regional competition, because strict rules mean regular entries in the national contest are almost impossible to achieve.

The judging will take place on July 3. Aldwick in Bloom co-ordinator Delia Jones said: "We hope to improve on the silver gilt from South and South East in Bloom. We can only do our absolute best."

Aldwick benefited from a host of organisations and residents keen to ensure the area looked as nice as possible, she stated.

Typical of the work carried out is the recent installation of bat boxes on Aldwick Green along with new and replacement bird boxes.

Nearby resident MP Nick Gibb joined Aldwick Green Conservation Society members to put in the bird homes.

Other groups which take part in the in Bloom campaign are the Aldwick Preservation Society, the two Rose Green schools, and the Friends of Marine Park Gardens.

The gardens were awarded the accolade of one of the best sites of their kind in the south and south-east last year.

But Mrs Jones added it was important as many homeowners as possible played their part.

"It would be nice if everybody made their gardens as attractive as possible around the judges' visit as well as making sure there is no litter around," she said.
