4.3m CIGARETTES HAUL AT PORT

A Latvian national lorry driver was remanded in custody at Lewes Magistrates Court yesterday after pleading not guilty to a charge of duty evasion after Customs officers at Newhaven seized 4.3 million L&M cigarettes.

A Customs search of a lorry that was carrying pallets of Bratwurst sausages destined for an address in Newbridge, Co. Kildare, Ireland, revealed that cigarettes were hidden amongst the load of sausages.

The cigarettes, sausages, lorry and trailer were seized by Customs.

Aleksandrs Yunga, 36, of Kuldiga, Latvia, was arrested, interviewed and subsequently charged with duty evasion.

An application for bail was refused and Yunga has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance, at Brighton Magistrates Court on Thursday, March 2.
