The castle is already boasting a plethora of flowers in full bloom, ranging from exotic canna lilies to bright purple agapanthus.

In the cut flower garden, a tremendous display of Babylon dahlias have come into blossom, standing proud at more than a metre tall, with flowers the size of dinner plates. It is also showcasing its array of harvest goodies and autumnal scarecrows.

Martin Duncan, head gardener, said: “Now is an ideal time for gardeners keen to learn about growing their own produce to visit as we have had a bumper crop this season.

“We have an abundance of seasonal vegetables. including runner beans, mange tout, potatoes, cabbages, kale and courgettes.

“We have also had great success with growing tomatoes, hot chillies, apples and pears. In fact, the gardens have been so fruitful this year that I have set up an ‘honesty box’ for visitors to take home a selection of produce in return for a donation.”
