Discover the history of Hastings Old Town
Did you know that in the 1860s a family lived with a large variety of animals in the Rock-a-Nore caves? What was the ice house? Why were the net shops built upwards? Who was Biddy the Tub Man? These are some of the questions to be answered in an illustrated talk by Ken Brooks at the Shipwreck Museum, on Sunday July 19 at 2.30pm.
During the last 150 years, the traditional fishing community has been threatened by the development of Hastings as a holiday resort. Images on a large screen will show how this has affected the Rock-a-Nore area. Pictures from the 19/20th centuries will be compared with present-day views. Topics will include local characters, fishing boats, net shops, the Fishermen’s Church, the Tan House, the East Well and a harbour construction project in 1896. Pre-booking advised on 01424 426459.
