MGM’s musical love story was nominated for four Academy Awards in 1945, including Best Cinematography, Best Original Music, Best Original Song and Best Screenplay. Sadly, the film didn’t collect a single statuette.
Now, the BFI re-issues Vincente Minnelli’s evergreen 1944 film for a limited UK release.
Set in St Louis at the turn of the 20th century, the film follows the ups and downs of the wealthy Smith family, including parents Alonzo and Anna (Leon Ames, Mary Astor), and four daughters Esther, Rose, Agnes and Tootie (Judy Garland, Lucille Bremner, Joan Carroll, Margaret O’Brien).
Trouble looms on the horizon when Mr Smith lands a new job in New York and the family face the possibility of leaving their home.
Released: December 16 (UK, selected cinemas), 113 mins
