As the wedding party came into view, Will Tierney changed his tune – and serenaded them with Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love.

The newlyweds – Jack and Rosie Davis – joined in the fun and quickly started dancing in the street – a moment captured on video by Debbie Ford.

Will, originally from Chichester and now living in Southsea, said: “It was a great buzz. It was really lovely. It was really great – purely by chance.

“I had just plugged in on Saturday and decided to busk from three to five. Before the pandemic, I was a full-time musician and all the gigs disappeared, so I have started busking in Portsmouth. This was actually my first gig in Chichester.

“And I had only been there about five minutes when I heard cheering and shouting, and I could see that there was something going on at the cross. And then I saw the couple coming towards me so I thought I had better change the tune to something more romantic. I can’t remember what I was playing… and the couple just started dancing. There was an impromptu party in the street. It was great. I never expected it! A lot of the time, people just don’t seem to notice buskers; they are just part of the landscape. But this was just lovely, with the whole street seeming to be dancing.”

It was a boost to everyone: “The whole music industry is on hold at the moment, and it seems it is going to get worse before it gets better. It looks like there is going to be no real sign of improvement for the next few months if we are going to get a second wave. Let’s hope things are better by next spring. This can’t just go on forever.”

For the meantime, Will, a former student at Parklands and Chichester High School, will hold things together by busking – during the week in Portsmouth and aiming to get back to his old home town of Chichester for the weekends.

“I think a lot of people are really pleased to hear some music”
