Since Frankel retired at the end of the 2012 season, there’s been massive interest in whether he’d be as impressive as a sire as he was on the racecourse.
So far, with his first crop of two-year-olds’ debut seasons behind them, it looks like he is as much a champion sire as he was a champion racer.
Goodwood race-goers were lucky enough to see five of his offspring in action in the 2016 season and one of them stood out from the rest.
Monarchs Glen, born to American mare Mirabilis in February 2014, is trained by John Gosden and owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah and made his racing debut at Goodwood in the Eve Trakway EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes in September, finishing a short head behind winner Celestial Spheres.
‘Next time he’ll win,’ said those in the know - and they were right, as you can see in our video, above.
Monarchs Glen won the Hildon Water Irish EBF Maiden Stakes at Goodwood’s season finale 18 days after that bow on the Downs and did so in fine style, beating stablemate Pearler by a length and a quarter.
Both races were one mile, one furlong and similar contest will be on connections’ radar for next season.
Monarchs Glen seems certain to return to Goodwood as a three-year-old and you wouldn’t want to bet against him landing a decent prize or two.
