Unlike the wet and wild setting for last year’s finals day at Bognor Lawn Tennis Club, the glorious sunshine proved a memorable backdrop.

Members gathered for the annual tournament not just for the tennis, but to socialise and enjoy a barbecue.

In the ladies’ singles and the draw for partners, finalists Jenny Loversidge and Stella Smith treated spectators to a three-set match, which ended when Loversidge won the final set 6-2.

In the draw for partners match, Steve Pollard and Fiona Callingham beat Tom Campbell and Eileen Bright 6-3, 6-1.

The veterans’ doubles saw Marjorie and Keith Patterson play well but lose to Jean Mugleston and Neil O’Boyle.

Mugleston returned to win the ladies’ doubles with Maree Loversidge, claiming the title over Jenny Loversidge and Patti Francis-Kerr, the final score 6-1, 6-2.

By time the eagerly anticipated men’s singles was ready to be played, conditions were very warm. Tom Ford and Oli Callingham played exceptional rallies and to a high standard. After winning the first set 6-2, Callingham took the second set in a nail-biting tie-break. All agreed it was a brilliant match to watch.

Ford went on to play yet another tough match in the men’s doubles. With partner Dan Conway, he played a close-fought match against last year’s winners Robert Callingham and Dave Maskell. However, once again Callingham and Maskell took the title, winning 6-2, 6-4.

The last match of the day saw Conway in another final, this time the mixed doubles alongside Tracey Callingham. They struggled in the first set against Ruth Hendren and Chris Gosden and lost 6-0 but upped their game in the second set. Hendren and Gosden proved too strong and won in the tie-break 7-4.

Overall the day was a great success and was enjoyed by spectators and players alike.
