St James asked Middleton to bat and they opened with the two left-handed Wills, Affleck and Burrows. The pair put on 95 for the first wicket.

Affleck was first to go, lbw for 56. Burrows batted to the end of the innings, sharing partnerships with Sean Heather (23) and Ben Hansford (31).

He finished 102 not out and Middleton declared on 251-5 off 46.2 overs.

The St James total was on 37 before the first wicket fell, with Patrick Colvin hanging on to a sharp slip catch off Tommy Davies to remove opener Mahmood.

The second wicket saw St James skipper Michael Murray caught by Sean Heather off Jamie Thompson in the 14th over.

Five overs later Matt Reynolds was introduced into the attack and proceeded to take six for 47 in ten overs. He was supported perfectly at the other end by Craig Fowle (2-22).

St James were bowled out for 129 in 37.5 overs.

Ansty v Bognor

Sussex League division two

In mid-Sussex, Bognor skipper Zayne Bux won the toss and chose to field, his team bolstered by the return of veteran players Elliott Clarke, Graham Bush and Joe Ashmore.

The latter two resumed where they left off the previous season with the Bush taking four for 47 and the ever-zesty Ashmore twirling his way to three for 44 as the hosts were bowled out for 145, Sam Palser top scoring with 35.

However it didn’t prove to be Bognor’s day and despite Ashmore’s battling 48 not out, with support from elder brother Max, who made 37, Ansty’s Jake Wilson had a day to remember taking eight for 48 as Bognor were bowled out for 128, Ansty winning by 17 runs.

Bognor 2nd XI v Stirlands 2nd XI

Second XI division three west

At the Regis Oval, Bognor seconds brought their A-game to the party with a comprehensive victory.

Upon winning the toss and fielding, Bognor’s Jim Lee bagged three for 18, the solid Charlie Hunter grabbed four for four and the man of the hour Tom Woolnough grabbed an excellent three for nought as Stirlands were bowled out for 25.

The target was quickly acquired by Bognor with no wickets down as new skipper Josh Seward bagged his maiden victory.
