SOUTHERN trainers enjoyed success at long odds at Fontwell Park’s penultimate meeting of 2015.
Findon’s Nick Gifford was delighted to see Fontwell favourite Tom Cannon win the T I Engineering Structural Ltd Handicap Chase on his 10/1 shot Toohighforme.
Then Winchester handler Chris Gordon tasted an even bigger victory, with the John And Maryanne Birch Memorial Handicap Hurdle taken by Marc Goldstein on Superciliary at 25/1.
Those results were a far cry from recent Fontwell action, which has seen many favourites and joint-favourites prosper.
But elsewhere on an afternoon when the crowd sported Christmas jumpers and enjoyed some winter sunshine, things were a little more predictable.
Something you can forecast at Fontwell is success for Sussex trainer Gary Moore and sure enough, he was in the winner’s enclosure when son Jamie rode the 7/4 favourite Darebin to victory in the Axio Special Works Christmas Raceday Juvenile Hurdle.
The card opened with victory for Wayne Hutchinson and trainer Alan King with Katie Too, the 4/5 favourite, taking the smartcomputersbristol.com Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle.
Tom Scudamore piloted the 3/1 favourite Alternatif first past the post in the NJS Handicap Chase while Amidon, ridden by Sussex’s Leighton Aspell for Lucy Wadham, won the T I Engineering Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase after going off 4/1.
Racing ended with another 4/1 winner in the ROA/Racing Post Handicap Hurdle as Tom O’Brien did the business on Thepartysover for Paul Henderson.
Next up at Fontwell it’s the big Boxing Day meeting when a crowd of up to 8,000 is expected. See next week’s Observer and our Christmas-week edition for previews.
