By the turn of the year, the persistently-wet and windy weather had played havoc with the intentions of Bognor Tennis Club members to follow their usual schedule of playing several times a week.
So the 32 players who signed up for the club’s annual winter warmer fun tournament were delighted when conditions on the chosen date turned out reasonably sunny, relatively calm and completely dry from start to finish.
With all five of the club’s courts in use throughout the morning it was possible to play eight rounds of doubles, each lasting 17 minutes, which enabled every competitor to play five rounds each.
To add an element of variety, some games were solely men’s fours, some were entirely ladies’ and some were mixed. In addition, some fours were deliberately organised to include players of a similar playing standard, while other fours were a calculated mix of different abilities.
Throughout the tournament the number of games and points won by every competitor were recorded and, when the last round was complete, all the scores were tallied to provide a total for each contestant and a ranking list for the 16 men and 16 ladies.
The top six men and women, based on the number of games and points won, with number of wins, draws and losses shown, were as follows:
1 Neil O’Boyle 25 (4 wins, 1 loss), Patti Francis-Kerr 23.50 (4 wins, 1 draw); 2 Jonathan Towse 23.75 (4 wins, 1 loss), Jo Tite 22.75 (4 wins, 1 loss); 3 David Rowley 20 (2 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss), Jean Mugleston 20.75 (2 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses); 4 Paul Woodward 19.25 (2 wins, 2 draws, 1 loss), Ruth Hendren 19.75 (4 wins, 1 loss); 5 Gerry Crowe 18.50 (3 wins, 2 losses), Heather Perrott 19 (4 wins, 1 loss); 6 Ed Farmer 17.75 (3 wins, 2 losses), Stella Davis 18.75 (2 wins, 3 losses).
