Chichester’s new Netball League began with four exciting matches – suggesting this is going to a close-fought league.
The first round of matches saw Fishbourne Flames Red take on the Lilac Dolphins from Selsey.
The Flames are an experienced side who also compete in the Portsmouth League. The Dolphins gave them a good match but Flames’ natural ability to work as a team shone through, giving them a 31-12 victory.
Flames received five points with a 19-point goal difference securing them the top spot in the early Lizi’s Chichester Netball League table. Purple Dolphins are the sister team to the Lilac Dolphins and they took on the Independent team. Each league night the Independent team will be formed of players not signed to a specific club, reserves and even players from the other round who want to play two matches in a night.
End to end play resulted in a close battle with the Purple Dolphins snatching a 20-12 win.
The late round had Fishbourne Flames Blue playing the youngest team in the league from Seaford College, The Seaford Diamonds.
This was the first night the Blue Flames had played together as a team and after a half-time position swap they started to gel.
The Diamonds sparkled – they will be a force to be reckoned with. The Diamonds clinched their first victory by 31-14. The goal difference of 17 places them second in the league, making it very close at the top.
Midhurst took on Chichester team Footloose in another close game. Good defensive work kept the score low, but Midhurst crept ahead by two goals at half-time.
They extended that to a four-goal difference after the third quarter and managed a final victory of 17-11. Five points for Midhurst but Footloose take two points for getting more than half their opponents’ score.
Player of the night was Caroline Bentz, who joined the Independent team and scored two amazing goals.
Granola snacks were supplied to fuel the players from the League’s Sponsor Lizi’s Granola.
