TWO OF boxing’s great stalwarts have landed the ‘MBE for volunteer groups’ for their club.

Ken Charman and Lou Stamp will today attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace after Titchfield ABC were given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

It is recognition for Titchfield’s long-running standing in their community and importance on the amateur scene.

The club continue to raise funds for good causes, including Aiden Farrell, who The News yesterday reported has been able to take his first steps after £33,000 was raised for surgery.

Charman and Stamp have held a string of roles for both Hampshire & Isle of Wight and Southern Counties ABAs. Titchfield chairman Charman and coach Stamp have also clocked up approaching 100 years of service to the sport through their club.

It is understood that it is the first time a boxing club has received the accolade – regarded by the government as the MBE for voluntary groups.

Stamp admitted the pair were stunned to see the club given the award.

But the duo see the accolade as recognition for everyone who has given up their time to ensure Titchfield can serve the community.

Stamp said: ‘I had the shock of my life when I found out we’d been selected!

‘We were so shocked but so pleased at the same time.

‘We have to make it plain this is an award for the club.

‘We wouldn’t have been able to do what we do without all the help for the people who help the boys.

‘It’s a club thing and we are part of a team. We are very, very proud to receive the honour. It’s never happened that a boxing club has been considered before.

‘So our hopes weren’t too high we’d be selected. We are very patriotic, so it will be a special occasion for us.’

Stamp believes Titchfield are helping to redress some of the miscomprehensions about boxing.

He added: ‘Amateur boxing is not about oafs and bullies.

‘There is so much good which comes out of the sport.

‘And there are some wonderful people in our club, so it’s satisfying to receive the award for them.’
