The first competitions of the Friday Summer League season got under way with the divisional trebles knockouts at Newtown Social Club.
A total of 81 players took to the oche bidding for the first trophies of the season. That’s a bit down on the winter season, but more than last summer.
Ten teams of three turned up for the division-one knockout. The first semi-final saw Richard Ragless, Rob Ragless and Dave Coupland (Wheatsheaf) take on Gary Blackwood, Matt Spindler and Jack Danahar (Claremont Cobras) - the latter three reaching the final.
The second semi was between Ian Hackett, Roger Hackett and Derek Longhurst (Wheatsheaf) and Dave Owens, Sam Abrehart and Graeme Dutton (POW Z). The POW Z trio went through.
That meant a final between the current top two division-one teams and the winners were the Claremont trio, but only just.
Another ten teams of three turned up for the division-two knockout.
The first semi saw Steve Aizlewood, Steve Taylor & John Abbott (BRSA B) face Tim McCarthy, Lee Helleyer and Jackie Duckett (Friary C). The BRSA team had too much for the Friary three.
The second match was between Garry Rose, Terry Smith and Mick Delaney (BRSA B) and Debbie Ling, Des Ling and Glo Green (Aldwick Legion A). The BRSA team made their way to the final.
Aizlewood, Taylor and Abbott added to their division-three title from the winter league and became division-two champions.
The division-three knockout saw only seven teams take to the oche.
The first semi-final involved Sam Chant, Andy Chant and Mark Carruthers (Battleships) taking on Richard Pennells, Lee Clark and Ashley Clements (Old Barn). Old Barn made the final.
In the second semi, Ben Todd, Mark H Todd and Steve Dempsey (BRSA Ravens) beat their team-mates Maureen Dempsey, Dan Gill and Bradley Marshall.
The division-three final saw Pennells, Clark and Clements on slightly better form.
