The shortlist for the 13th annual Sussex Sports Awards has been announced and it features three Observer area nominees.
The black tie event, to be held at The Grand Hotel in Brighton on Friday, November 27, will celebrate the achievements of Sussex sports stars and welcome a special guest, London 2012 heptathlete Louise Hazel with regular host BBC Sussex presenter Danny Pike.
Hazel will be on hand to inspire the audience and young athletes with her tales and anecdotes as she worked her way up to claim international recognition.
Nominees from Chichester include Lois Peake of North Mundham Table Tennis Club, shortlisted for the Freedom Leisure Sports Personality of the Year award.
Aged just 18, this year Peake became the first person from Sussex in more than 40 years to represent England at full international level at table tennis.
Having previously represented her country at school and junior levels, she has travelled across the UK for training – including a week in China. She recently played for England in Russia and is due to play in the Commonwealth Championships in India in November.
Meanwhile, Chichester District Council has been shortlisted for the Workplace Challenge award. This year the council have delivered a number of successful workplace health initiatives.
A team of voluntary workplace health activators have been recruited covering all council departments. Each activator is expected to generate formal and informal opportunities for physical activity participation, raise awareness of national/local health and wellbeing campaigns (eg Reaching Rio), and be an ambassador for good health within their service.
Open activity sessions have been set up for all staff, including a lunchtime running club, pre-work gym sessions, and regular competitive football/basketball/badminton fixtures against other local organisations. A staff choir, yoga and pilates sessions are also available.
Jess Breach has also been shortlisted for the University of Chichester Young Sports Personality of the Year award. Breach has played rugby since she was seven, initially as part of a boys’ team on Sundays at Chichester Rugby Club.
Over the past five years she has been in the London and south-east divisional squad both in the 15 and seven-a-side squads. For the past four years she has been in a talent development group – a national selection of the most promising 24 players in the country.
She took part in trials and was successfully selected for the first under-18 England women’s sevens squad to take part in the FIRA European Championships. Breach was 16 at the time, there were 12 countries competing in Sweden and she played every game scoring nine tries and England won every game and were crowned European champions.
Sadie Mason, Active Sussex chief executive, said: “Chichester clubs have a long history of producing top sporting talent and this year is no different.
“In 2014 the region had no less than ten nominees and this success has been carried on into 2015 as we get set to celebrate the achievements made by clubs, sports stars, coaches, and volunteers across the area.
“I would like to congratulate all of those who have been shortlisted and wish all nominees the best of luck ahead of what promises to be another memorable Sussex Sports Awards.”
