David Butler was the only member of Bognor’s Tone Zone Runners to wear the club’s colours at the gruelling Southdowns Way ultra-running event, which covers 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne.

Butler, who had trained religiously for months, set off mindful of the 30-hour time limit.

Having completed the vast majority of the sections to his pace plan, the long hours of running and fatigue became more evident on the latter stages.

Of the 189 starters, 42 dropped out during the challenge, proving it was a balance of physical and mental strength to complete this event. Butler had to dig deep to finish this race but persevered to cross the line in 27hr 43min.

Grace Natoli was the only competitor from the club for the second year running at the Purbrook ladies’ five-mile race in Hampshire. Her dedication paid off as she recorded a new personal-best time of 42min 55sec, nearly two minutes faster than her previous fastest.

The popular Chichester Runners’ Midsummer 5 is popular with Tone Zone and a new record was set for the club with 39 entries, only a few behind the host club’s total.

Simon Gill was first back for the club, finishing eighth in 28.13.

The club’s third male home was Mike Batstone, who was also third in his age category.

Young Jack Penfold continued his impressive form, finishing just behind Bastone in 33.45 and taking fourth for Tone Zone. For the club’s ladies, Anna Enes finished first with Amanda Worne second.

Personal bests with plentiful. No fewer than 15 of the club’s runners recording improved times. Among these PBs, experienced Natoli was running her second race of the week and came home in 41 minutes.

Jacqui Salt, Richard Peach, Judith Bazeley and Debbie Patching all impressed - shaving more than four minutes off their previous times.

As part of the West Sussex Fun Run League, the Arunners staged their five-mile beach run. Tone Zone had five runners competing in this interesting new route, mainly based on Littlehampton beach but with plenty of shingle thrown in to test the limbs.

Debbie Ward was not only first to finish for the club and first lady overall. Ward became the first Tone Zone lady to win a race. Gary Pidgeon was first for the men with another strong performance but Louisa Proctor pushed him all the way, finishing only one second behind. Joan Woolley put on another good show to finish powerfully.

In other races, Tony Hancock represented the club at the Owston 10k in Lincolnshire, running a time of 41 minutes. Hancock was first in his category.

Hancock also ran in the Lakeside 5k series in Portsmouth. This, the third race of five, was his fastest 5k of the sequence and finished in 20.15. Also running this race was Debbie Patching crossing the line in 27.10.

Peter Chittenden ran the Hayling Island five-mile Billy race in 50.48, finishing first in his age category. Chittenden also completed the North Downs 30k challenge in 4hr 31min, rounding off a good month.

At the Lordshill 10k in Southampton, the club had four runners involved. Jack Penfold finished first for the club in 44min 6sec.

Just behind Penfold was Tony Hancock in 44.20.

Daniel Hughes (54.14) and Glenn Penfold (55.35) made up the team.
