Pompey Ladies were glad to be back in action as they crushed Keynsham 4-0 to march on in the FA Women’s Cup.

Gemma Simmonds scored twice as the Blues set up a clash with Lewes at home in the third round.

Strikes from Gemma Hillier and Sarah Kempson completed a fine victory.

The rain in recent weeks had left the Blues out of action since the middle of December, when they beat Brighton.

In that time, Pompey were twice unable to host the cup fixture with Keynsham due to waterlogged pitches.

That meant, in accordance with competition rules, the tie was reversed.

However, the change of venue proved no problem.

The Blues were just delighted to finally play the game after two previous weeks of build-up with no match action.

Joint Pompey boss Perry Northeast felt they showed hunger, desire and quality.

He said: ‘After all the talk about everything, it was great to get it played.

‘We had a good vibe before the game and were keen to get out there.

‘The first 10 minutes was a little bit edgy but we created the better openings in the first half.

‘We were clinical.’

Pompey made a strong start and took the lead on nine minutes.

Striker Charley Wilson saw her shot parried by the home keeper and Simmonds was able to slide the ball into the back of the net.

Wilson was unlucky again five minutes later.

She fired against the post and this time it was Hillier who profited as she slotted the ball past the Keynsham keeper.

On 36 minutes, Pompey added a third goal to really grab the game by the throat.

They broke on the counter-attack and Kempson showed great composure to lift the ball over the keeper from 30 yards out.

Keynsham were in determined mood in the second half as they attempted to limit the damage.

Their resistance was broken, with 10 minutes left to play, as the Blues added a fourth goal.

Hillier beat one defender and fed Simmonds who fired home her second of the match.

Northeast felt it was the perfect return for the team after their extended winter break.

He said: ‘We have a couple of things to work on but the whole team did well.

‘There is only so much you can work on in training without having games but they followed the game plan quite nicely.

‘It was a great first game to have had after Christmas.

‘Now we have to push on from this.’
