Andy Awford spoke of his pleasure at seeing Matt Tubbs open his Pompey account.
But the Blues boss believed it was his team’s defensive steel and organisation which gave them the platform for their 1-0 win over Hartlepool.
Tubbs’ second-half header ended Pompey’s nine-game winless run and eased the pressure on Awford.
That gave him his first goal in a blue shirt since arriving from AFC Wimbledon.
Awford was happy to see him get off the mark but felt the key reason for the win came elsewhere.
He said: ‘I’m delighted for Matt to get his goal.
‘But I was delighted for all of the boys because it was a win which was deserved.
‘It was as quiet a game as Paul Jones has had for a long time.
‘There were a couple of late free-kicks but we saw it out very well and I was pleased with how we managed that.
‘I was pleased with how we defended. That gave us the platform to get the win.’
