Toothless Pompey fell to a depressing 2-0 defeat to AFC Wimbledon today.
Fierce boos were heard around Fratton Park on the final whistle as first-half goals from Frankie Sutherland and Blues target Matt Tubbs did the damage.
Dan Butler was sent off in the second half on a Boxing Day clash to forget for Pompey fans.
Andy Awford’s side were given a lesson in the art of ruthless finishing as Wimbledon took control of the game early on.
Former Blues loanee Sutherland put the visitors in front after nine minutes, with a fine 25-yard curler.
It got worse eight minutes later as the Dons doubled their lead with a quick free-kick.
Barry Fuller took the set-piece swiftly and Tubbs caught the Pompey defence napping, as he finished emphatically.
Ryan Taylor hit the post as Pompey attempted to reply but Tubbs had a decent penalty appeal ignored as he went down under the attention of Marcus Bean.
Lee Holmes had a shot 10 minutes before the break – to ironic cheers from the home crowd.
Those cheers turned to boos on the half-time whistle.
Nigel Atangana was introduced at the break but that didn’t change the pattern of the game.
Butler was dismissed after 69 minutes for a second yellow card – after fouling George Francomb.
And it looked like the Dons were more likely to score late on as Pompey continued to be second best.
The inevitable boos were then heard on the full-time whistle on a horrible day for Blues fans.
