ANDY AWFORD has deemed Peter Brezovan’s arrival a ‘no-brainer’.
The Pompey boss yesterday moved to secure the 34-year-old keeper on non-contract terms.
Brezovan arrives as cover for Paul Jones, with Michael Poke out with an Achilles injury.
Awford explained that Brezovan’s stay at Fratton Park will be a short one.
But he is happy the former Brighton man gives him the experience he’s looking for.
Awford: ‘We get a list updated weekly of players out of contract.
‘So we looked at that and spoke to people in the game about Peter.
‘Scott Bevan (goalkeeper coach) had a big part to play.
‘Peter has been around a long time and is full of experience.
‘It was a no-brainer really, because he was sat around doing nothing.
‘I spoke to Jamie Ashdown first because I know all about him.
‘But it made sense for Peter to come in and train when he’s sat around.
‘It’ll only be for two or three weeks. If he gets on he gets on.’
Awford explained rulings surrounding the transfer window are likely to restrict Brezovan staying at the club for an extended period.
The Pompey boss will play the Slovakian in a friendly at the Hawks tomorrow, and will weigh up any further inclusion.
He said: ‘We’ll have a look at it and see how Paul Jones is doing.
‘If he’s tired and needs a breather we can look at it possibly.
‘There’s a slight issue that if Peter is with us after the window closes he can’t play for another club this year.
‘The Johnstone’s Paint game is on September 2.
‘I’m not so sure he would be keen to do that because it’s not fair on him, so I don’t think he’ll be here that long.
‘I’ve told him there is no long-term deal here for him. I have my two keepers and young Alex Bass.
‘He’s cool with that and is happy to get some work in and keep himself fit.
‘If he gets some minutes he gets some minutes.
‘I’ll play him at Hawks tomorrow. It’s important he gets a game in case he’s needed.
‘It’s a deal which suits everyone. We’ve got an experienced keeper there if he’s needed.’
