Guy Whittingham saluted Pompey’s second-half display as they shocked Oxford to progress in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

The Blues were fortunate to go in at the break goalless at the Kassam Stadium tonight having been dominated and not even registering an attempt on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

But they stepped up their game considerably after the break and the introduction of Patrick Agyemang inspired them to a second successive win.

The substitute netted in the 55th minute and John Marquis added a second in the 82nd minute before James Constable pulled one back a minute from time.

Whittingham’s men, though, held on for a 2-1 triumph and put themselves in the draw for the third round.

He said: ‘At half-time I told them what they did on Saturday, to make sure they worked hard.

‘Oxford were working a lot harder than us and we weren’t putting them under pressure whatsoever.

‘They responded, though, and it was far better after the break.

‘Jed (Wallace) thinks Pat’s is the second-best goal this season but I think it was a fantastic goal.

‘To do that six minutes after coming on was fantastic.

‘I’m pleased for John Marquis as well.

‘He works hard and has an egg on his head from Saturday but he got his rewards.

‘That’s back-to-back wins now and we have that momentum to take it into Saturday at Plymouth.’
