Awford will have final say over coach

ANDY AWFORD will have the final say on who arrives as his new first-team coach.

That’s the promise from Pompey as the hunt for a new member of Awford’s backroom team continues.

Awford is undertaking the search in the wake of Alan McLoughlin’s departure from Fratton Park last week.

And Mark Catlin promised the ultimate say on who comes in will lie with the Blues manager.

Pompey have come in for criticism for the handling of McLoughlin’s exit after more than three years on the club’s coaching staff.

But the board feel they have done all they can to handle the process correctly.

The desire is to add experience of lower league football to Awford’s team, with his position as manager safe moving forward.

Pompey have been inundated with people keen to come into the role.

Discussions are continuing with candidates and, although there is no set time-span for the appointment, it appears a decision before the Accrington game on Saturday is unlikely,

Awford is due to speak today on the subject at his scheduled pre-match press conference.

But chief executive Catlin explained the call to make the appointment will rest with Awford, and there will not be outside interference.

Catlin said: ‘It’s led by Andy and it’s his decision.

‘Anyone who knows Andy knows the character of him.

‘Myself, Iain and the board are all here to support Andy in any decision he’ll make.

‘It’s a football decision. Since the board took over the club they have not interfered in the football operations.’
