Fratton has got its fortress back again.

That is the verdict of Andy Awford, with Pompey noticeably loving life at home again.

The Blues have won five of their eight League Two matches at Fratton Park so far this season.

In the process they have collected 17 points from a possible 24, nursing just the one defeat.

It is an impressive record which contrasts with results on their travels, where only six points have been amassed to date.

But at home it is a different matter, with the fear factor back for opposition players and the wins flowing – last weekend’s 3-0 victory over Carlisle being the latest.

Next up are non-league Aldershot on Sunday in the first round of the FA Cup.

And Fratton Park is on its way to returning to its intimidating best.

Awford said: ‘This is becoming a fortress again, which is what we need, definitely.

‘The home record is promotion form, it really is, you just have to see our results.

‘Two of the next three are also at home, including the FA Cup game, with Plymouth away sandwiched in between Aldershot and Morecambe.

‘I don’t know whether improvements to the changing room and tunnel areas have contributed to it, I’d like to think those little bits help.

‘But the players are more used to playing here, while other teams have been here and played here now, so maybe it is a little bit easier to win games than it had been before.

‘Now we need to keep on playing and building on the base we have created here at Fratton Park.’

Only Shrewsbury, Bury and Plymouth have a better home record than Pompey in League Two.
