Andy Awford has vowed to make Pompey’s players ‘bored’ of him focusing on eradicating their defensive deficiencies on the training pitch.
The caretaker boss was able only to spend 15 minutes working with the squad ahead of last night’s match against Southend.
The Blues subsequently shipped in two goals in the last 14 minutes to slump to a 2-1 defeat.
Once again the long-standing defensive problems proved costly, but Awford will work tirelessly to stamp them out.
He said: ‘They have got to learn quickly. It’s a habit conceding goals and you have got to get out of it.
‘They will be bored. As long as I am doing it (training) they will be bored of working defensively as a team.
‘I am not pointing fingers at central defenders or full-backs, it’s as a team. They have to defend better and that is what they will be working on.
‘It’s not just the defence. Let’s go into detail – the two midfield players got too deep, the two centre forwards became too deep and when you clear the ball you haven’t got anyone up the park to get you out.
‘That is something we need to address and we will. I will work with them on it, but when it comes in and around the box there is other stuff to do as well, obviously.
‘However, I felt the shape of the team last night was good, I felt everybody out there had a right go and I couldn’t fault their effort or application.
‘The lads gave absolutely everything.’
